Maybe a tropical resort vacation is way beyond your means, especially if you live in Europe. But never mind, did you know that you can enjoy a tropical  island stay in Germany? This is thanks to the Tropical Islands Resort at Krausnick. (See the map below).

You can enjoy beaches, waterfalls and tropical gardens and whatever the weather you’ll feel as though you’re in the tropics because the temperature is set to a comfortable upper-seventy degrees. Even the floor is heated so you can walk around in your bare feet.

There’s lots of fun to be had there as the place features a fabulous waterpark. There are many dining options too. And for your overnight stays, there are several accommodations for you to choose from – including top class hotels rooms and, at the other end of the scale, glamping in tents on the beach.

But it’s this history of the place that adds a further interest. The area was first used in the early 1930s as a potential base for the Luftwaffe. However it became under the jurisdiction of the Red Army at the end of WW2 in 1945. It was though. on the ‘wrong’ side of the Berlin Wall so was unused for many years.

However, after unification in 1990 the property was bought by a company that intended to build airships at the site. This seems a little optimistic to me and indeed, the company became bankrupt. But before they did, they had built a huge hangar for their proposed aircraft.

It is this enormous hangar that now holds the Tropical Island Resort. It has been extensive altered by the present owners and the roof glass means that not only do live tropical plants grow there but you can also get a suntan. You can read reviews here.
