There are many incredibly picturesque villages in France and Pont-en-Royans is an excellent example. You can see from the photographs how the brightly-coloured houses cling to the craggy cliff sides with the river running peacefully below.

As you can see from the map below, the village is located on the edge of the Vercors Regional Natural Park. Romantically (for me anyway) the area is peppered with natural caves that were used as temporary housing and hideouts for members of the Resistance during the Second World War.

This beautiful area is popular with travellers and Pont-en-Royans shouldn’t be missed. There are two hotels in the village. You can find out more about them here. At time of writing, the two hotels are $67 and $70 per night which is very reasonable. Both have all the amenities you’d expect. However, expect French charm rather than American-style luxury.
