Château de Candé is situated in Monts, Indre-et-Loire and, although it isn’t one of the grandest chateaux in France, it has an interesting historical significance.

It was here in June 1937 that the abdicated king, now retitled the Duke of Windsor, married his twice-divorced, American mistress, Wallis Simpson. See the video below – it’s contemporary footage.

You can see that neither the bride or groom look radiant. The groom looks simply grumpy and the bride is dressed in possibly the worst bridal outfit I can imagine.

The couple remained together until the death of the duke but never seemed to have a happy and fulfilled existence together. This is noticeable right from the beginning – from their wedding day.
