Visitors to Venice, or at least those who are in the know, often take a trip – even if just for a day – to the colourful island of Burano. It’s only a few kilometres from Venice itself and the water bus trip takes only about half an hour from St Mark’s Square.

As you can see from the images, Burano is a paradise for photographers as it features buildings that are brightly painted in strict accordance with Burano’s rules and regulations. Property owners who want to pain their buildings are given a selection of colours and they must adhere to these traditional hues.

Burano has its own cottage industry that has been in existence for generations, that of lace-making. This too is incredibly popular with the tourists who visit the area every year.
