I can’t even begin to describe to you that wonderful moment when I realised that Maggie Smith was going to play Miss Shepherd in Alan Bennett’s Lady in the Van. And a marvellous film it is too.

For those who don’t know, it’s the (largely) true story about Miss Shepherd who took up residence in playwright Alan Bennett’s garden in a succession of almost derelict vans. She inhabited the vans in the garden for fifteen years when Bennett lived at 23, Gloucester Crescent, Camden in London.

When the film was made, Bennett had moved out of the house but still owned it so naturally, it became the location for the film.
