Now before I even start to tell you about the new offerings from Airbnb, I want to make it abundantly clear that these adventures are for anyone. You don’t have to be 25 years old and a fit gym rat. You don’t have to be in the first flush of youth.

Yes, there are active adventures if that’s really your thing but there are also culinary experiences and those featuring animals, boating and cultural experiences. Here are just a few chosen randomly from the website:

  • Jamaica Culinary Adventure
  • Catalina Sailing Adventure
  • Horseback ride in Southern Spain
  • Visit the natural wonders of Peru
  • Wild beach adventure on the UK coast
  • Galapagos Slow Food Adventure
  • Explore deep into the Amazon Jungle
  • Walk with elephants in Chiang Mai
  • Epic motorbike trip through Vietnam
  • Hike to a hidden South African cave

Just a few examples, there.

These adventures include your accommodation and your meals. All you have to do, says Airbnb, is turn up. Any equipment you might need (like the odd camel for a desert trek or a kayak to gather culinary seaweed, whatever) will be provided. The duration of the trips vary too, I believe the shortest is for just two days. And the price? The Airbnb website tells me that the trips start at $99 per person.

Over the years, there has been plenty of speculation about Airbnb and where it’s going next in its business ventures. Some believe that the company is trying to take over from traditional accommodation entirely. To manage to put hotels out of business – or very much in second place – so that the company can corner the market in vacation stays.

Well, who knows? But when Airbnb Experiences were first set up, and now Airbnb Adventures, it does seem to me that the company is aiming to offer different types of travel experiences at a reasonable cost.

Note too that the adventures are excellent trips to go on if you’re travelling alone – camaraderie is bound to happen when you’re all in the same boat – literally in some cases.

This new service gives you the opportunity and freedom to experience activities that you might be a little nervous to try on your own. As the Airbnb website says:

Airbnb Adventures are hosted by thoughtful experts with deep ties to their local communities. They’ve created curated journeys for the nervous novice up to the seasoned trekker, for a range of budgets, interests, and locations. And everything is pre-planned, so just book and go.
