Spain remains the second most visited country in the world. But in the twentieth century many of its visitors were flocking to inexpensive coastal resorts for cheap beach vacations. People visited the country but saw nothing beyond the suntan and beachside bars. Shame, because Spain is a magnificent country, alive with history, incredible scenery, breathtaking architecture and a wealth of tradition.

Setenil de las Bodegas is an example of an astonishing town that for many years was overlooked by the hordes of visitors to the country. But now, when people want more from their vacation than sun and sex, Setenil de las Bodegas is a popular and unusual place for travellers to visit.

It’s an old settlement – its history dates back over 2000 years. But something that makes it a must to visit is the unusual local architecture. Buildings – homes, shops and businesses – have been built below rocky outcrops. This helps to shade a protect them.

However, Setenil de las Bodegas is layered as some building were erected above those same outcrops.

See the videos and photographs below. Gorgeous place.
