You probably didn’t know that May 5th is designated as Betty Willis Day. In fact, it may be that you’ve no idea at all who Betty Willis was. But I’ll bet you know one of her pieces of design work. Yes, the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.

Graphic designer Betty specialised in signs. The Las Vegas sign – typical of the Googie architecture of the time –  was designed in the nineteen fifties and was completed in 1959 and soon became an iconic photo op for visitors.

In fact, although there were no known fatalities despite the huge number of people who visited and photographed the sign, the local authorities took the matterin hand in 2008 and accepted that the sign was a tourist attraction.

They created vehicle parking and a safe way for visitors to explore and photograph the Vegas sign.

On the reverse of the famous sign are the words:

Drive Carefully Come Back Soon

WHERE IS THE WELCOME TO LAS VEGAS SIGN?
