Travel is one of the best experiences in the world. But different circumstances and travelling to out-of-the-way places can mean that we can’t always maintain the hygiene standards we are used to at home.

Of course, if you’re near the beach, a clear river or lake, then you can do what the girl in the photograph is doing above. But what if there’s no suitable body of water nearby? Or if the temperatures make you think that you’d rather stay dirty than plunge into freezing water?

One important thing that we need to remember is that unless you’re in an area where you are literally drenched in sweat all day, a daily shower isn’t necessary.

I know, that seems a bit offensive to many of us, but it’s true. The daily shower that we are now accustomed to is a relatively recent phenomenon. But nevertheless we are accustomed to feeling clean so what is the answer? There are several solutions.

Often truck stops, gyms, rest areas, airports, bus stations and public swimming pools have showers that you can use for a small fee. But you might be miles from these facilities.

If you’re camping or hiking, then there are various camp showers that are available (often using solar power to heat the water) but once again, these are only really of use in warmer weather – unless you’re much hardier than I am.

In many circumstances the answer is simple – use  Paper Shower Fresh. Even when we can’t shower on a daily basis, there are – if you will excuse me for being indelicate for a moment – certain areas of the body that need attention more than others. Paper Shower Fresh products come in packs of twelve individual cleaning packs and each contains a moist wipe (much larger than the usual wipes) plus a dry, disposable towel. You can simply cleanse with the wipe and use the disposable towel to dry off.

I’ve tested these and find that if you use a moist towel to cleanse your ‘cleaner’ areas first (such as your face and hands) you can continue to use it to clean dirtier areas such as your poor feet. And other areas, of course. The pack of twelve combos takes up very little space in your bag and is lightweight too.

And they really do make you feel fresh. This is despite the fact that they are unscented (yay) and contain no chemicals (yay again). They are the perfect alternative to a full shower and the fact that they have the drying cloth is an added bonus as it speeds up the job.

Note that they are not flushable but if you’re in a situation where you can flush then you’re unlikely to need them 🙂

These are also a great product to use at home. They can be used:

  • By people who cycle or walk to work – you can freshen up before the workday begins
  • Those who go to the gym during their lunch hour and don’t have time to shower
  • At times when you have no water supply in your home – due to a burst pipe or maintenance work, for example
  • For quick and easy cleaning up of kids
  • During long haul flights
  • After exercising at home or after jogging, yoga etc.
